Bullying in the Workplace: What to do About it

bullying-in-the-workplace-smA few weeks ago we talked about bullying in the workplace, a common problem that persists. No matter how much we urge our children to work on ending bullying in the classroom and the schoolyard, adults across North America deal with bullying on a day-to-day basis at work. While often more passive, it is undeniably present, and unfortunately far more often ignored.

This week we came across a great read from Forbes, “75% of Workers are Affected by Bullying – Here’s What to do About it.” We thought we’d share some of the insight.

According to the Workplace Bullying Institute, “Workplace Bullying is repeated, health-harming mistreatment of one or more persons (the targets) by one or more perpetrators. It is abusive conduct that is: threatening, humiliating, or intimidating, or work-interference, i.e. sabotage, which prevents work from getting done.” Bullying in the workplace is four times more common than either sexual harassment or racial discrimination on the job. And since research done at the University of Phoenix has shown that 75% of workers are affected by this, it has the potential for far-reaching impacts within your organization.

So, what can be done about it? While it is difficult to lay blame, the responsibility largely remains with the management team. These leaders are in the best position to confront the problem head on and take the steps necessary to address the underlying issue and stop the bullying.

Stop ignoring the problem and confront the bully. Outline the specific behaviours that have to change and set and agree upon objective performance measurements to ensure progress. Give the employee the tools required to transfer the feelings that are translating in unacceptable behaviour. Also, make sure the environment is open and encourage team members to ensure any incidences of workplace bullying are brought to your attention.

Bullying doesn’t just exist on the playground, and it is costing your company money. Together, we can make a difference.
